Shoppers still filled the floors below. Lee Joon, the chairman of the Sampoong Group, knew the building was failing. He did not close the store. At 5:52 p.m., cracking sounds echoed through the south wing, alarms began to wail, and then the roof caved in. The air conditioning units on top crashed through the overloaded fifth floor, and in less than twenty seconds, the entire south wing of the Sampoong Department Store pancaked into the basement, trapping more than 1,500 people.]]></description>
