Zell)., CC BY-SA 3.0. In 1953, on the windswept farm of Elandsfontein near Hopefield, South Africa, shifting sand dunes revealed something that had waited half a million years to be found. A fossilized cranium and a fragment of lower jaw lay exposed on the surface between the dunes, the ancient bones of a human ancestor who had walked this landscape when the Western Cape was unrecognizably different. The discovery would become one of the most important specimens of Homo heidelbergensis ever recovered in Africa, connecting South Africa's deep past to a web of archaic human sites stretching from Zambia to Tanzania.
