East of it, 50 Hz. This peculiarity dates back to the 1890s, when different regions imported generators from different countries, and the nation has never fully reconciled the difference. One of the critical points where east meets west is a concrete gravity dam wedged into a steep V-shaped gorge on the Tenryu River in central Honshu. Sakuma Dam stands 155.5 meters tall, a hollow-core wall of concrete that was the tallest dam in Japan when it was completed in 1956. But what makes it truly unusual is what sits one kilometer to its south: an HVDC frequency converter station that has been translating between Japan's two electrical languages since 1965.
