Sabetta: Introduction

Photo credit Tuomas Romu, CC BY-SA 3.0. There is no town at Sabetta, not in any traditional sense. No one was born here. No one retires here. What exists at 71 degrees north on the western shore of the Ob estuary is something more singular: a $27 billion industrial complex stamped onto permafrost, staffed entirely by fly-in, fly-out workers who rotate through shifts in one of the most hostile environments any port has ever operated in. Sabetta is the loading point for Yamal LNG, the liquefied natural gas project that has turned a blank stretch of the Yamal Peninsula into a node in the global energy network -- a place where Arctic ice, Russian gas, and Asian demand converge at a dock that did not exist before 2012.
