Princess Marie, daughter of King Stephen and the rightful Countess of Boulogne, had taken religious vows and risen to lead the community of Benedictine women. But Matthew wanted her title and her lands, and he forced her into marriage despite her vows. The couple had two daughters before the union was annulled in 1170 and Marie returned to monastic life. It is a story of power, coercion, and defiance that captures the precarious position of medieval religious women, and it is only one chapter in the long history of a nunnery that has endured more than most buildings have any right to.
