When he sat down to write Bleak House in 1853, Rockingham Castle -- or something very like it -- became Chesney Wold, the brooding ancestral seat of Sir Leicester Dedlock. The castle Dickens knew was already ancient. It had stood on its hilltop in Northamptonshire since William the Conqueror ordered a wooden motte and bailey erected there in the 11th century, and it has been someone's home ever since.]]></description>
