Nelson Mandela lived in this space for eighteen years -- from 1964 to 1982 -- and in various other cells on Robben Island until 1982, part of the 27 years he spent imprisoned before the fall of apartheid. But Mandela was not the first political prisoner on this island, and he was far from the last. Robben Island Prison held generations of people whose only crime was demanding freedom, from Autshumato in 1658 -- one of the first indigenous people to resist European colonialism at the Cape -- to the anti-apartheid activists of the 1980s. Three former inmates went on to become President of South Africa. The prison that was built to break them instead made them unbreakable.
