In 1902, prospector William Collier shot a roan antelope beside the Luanshya River in what was then Northern Rhodesia. When he walked up to the fallen animal, its head lay on a rock seamed with copper ore. Whether the tale is embellished or not — A. Chester Beatty, who retold it in a 1931 speech to the American Institute of Mining Engineers, admitted it should be "taken for what it is worth" — the copper beneath that swampy horseshoe bend of the river was real enough. It would take another quarter century before anyone understood just how much of it there was.
