Red Sea State: Introduction

Red Sea State covers 218,887 square kilometers of northeastern Sudan, the whole of the country's frontage on a body of water that has connected Africa and Arabia since the first Egyptian fleet sailed south to Punt around 2500 BCE. If you took this state away from Sudan, you would take away the sea. You would also take away the Beja, the Cushitic-speaking pastoralists whose ancestors were already here when the pharaohs came looking for gold and incense.
