Edward IV landed there in 1471, returning from exile in the Netherlands, before defeating his Lancastrian opponents at the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury. Shakespeare mentions Ravenspurn - or 'Ravenspurgh' as he spelled it - in Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, and Henry VI Part 3. The town was real. The town mattered. And then the North Sea took it, one storm at a time, until nothing of it remained above water. More than thirty settlements have vanished from the Holderness coast since the nineteenth century. Ravenspurn went earlier and went completely.
