On the night of December 24, 1886, a group of young men gathered in a crumbling house in Baranagore, on the outskirts of Calcutta, and took informal monastic vows. Their teacher, the mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, had died five months earlier. Shortly before his death, he had given each of them ochre cloth -- the traditional mark of Hindu renunciation -- and entrusted their care to one disciple above all: a young man named Narendranath Datta, who would soon become Swami Vivekananda. From that modest beginning, in a rented house near the Ganges, emerged one of the most influential spiritual and humanitarian movements in modern Indian history.]]></description>
