Men in top hats and morning coats extract a groundhog from a heated burrow and consult him on the coming season. If Phil sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter; if not, early spring. The tradition dates to 1887, rooted in German Candlemas folklore transplanted to Pennsylvania Dutch country. Phil's predictions are statistically worse than chance - around 40% accurate. None of this matters. The crowd cheers; the cameras broadcast worldwide; the groundhog returns to his climate-controlled burrow. The ritual is the point, not the forecast.
