On June 15, 1904, more than 1,300 members of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church crowded aboard the sidewheel steamboat General Slocum for their annual Sunday school picnic on Long Island Sound. Most were women and children from Manhattan's Little Germany neighborhood, dressed in their finest summer clothes, carrying baskets of food and laughter. Within hours, an estimated 1,021 of them would be dead, victims of fire, drowning, and a catastrophic chain of negligence that turned a pleasure cruise into the worst maritime disaster in New York City history.]]></description>
