The road tops a low hill, and there below sits a horseshoe of pastel houses arranged around a sheltered bay, with steep green ridges climbing behind them. Pink, blue, yellow, white. The fishing boats and pleasure craft bob at moorings. The Cuillin throw long shadows from the south on a clear evening. Port Rìgh in Gaelic, King's Port, named perhaps for the 1540 visit of James V. It is Skye's only real town, with a population of 2,300, and it is where every road on the island eventually leads.
