Photo credit CC BY-SA 2.0. Every car you have ever rented in Europe probably came ashore here. The Port of Zeebrugge handles more new vehicles than any port on Earth - over 1.6 million units in a typical year - rolled off ships from Japan, South Korea, the United States, and the German interior, then driven onto the railway and the motorway and dispersed across the continent. You see it from the air as a vast rectilinear apron of asphalt, kilometres of it, stippled with neat rows of Audis and Toyotas waiting to begin their new lives. None of it would exist without a Ghent alderman who, in 1866, stood up at a public lecture and described his dream of a deep-water harbour on a stretch of empty Belgian beach.
