Visitors expecting a dramatic geological formation find instead a modest boulder, sheltered in a neo-classical portico, inscribed with '1620,' and measuring perhaps three feet across. This is Plymouth Rock, allegedly the first landing spot of the Pilgrims, and one of America's most mythologized landmarks. The problem: no contemporary account mentions landing on a rock. The identification came 121 years after the supposed event, from a 94-year-old man recounting stories his father had told him. Since then, the rock has been broken, moved, dropped, chipped for souvenirs, and reduced to perhaps a third of its original size. Yet it persists as symbol - proof that Americans need founding legends more than they need them to be true.
