To reach the Pioneer Yosemite History Center, you cross a covered bridge. That detail matters more than it seems. The bridge was built around 1868 by Galen Clark, the man who first championed federal protection for Yosemite and became the park's first guardian after Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant in 1864. Crossing that bridge is a literal threshold between the modern park and its pioneer origins. On the other side stands a cluster of historic buildings, each plucked from a different corner of Yosemite and reassembled here in Wawona during the 1950s and 1960s.
