Long before anyone measured it at 2,002 meters, the peak announced itself to the people who lived in its shadow, a blade of rock cutting the horizon of the Serra do Espinhaço. It is the kind of mountain that demands a name rather than receives one. Stand at its base in Minas Gerais, 357 kilometers northeast of Belo Horizonte, and the word makes sense before you know the language.
