For more than a thousand years, Piazza San Marco has been the civic, religious, and ceremonial heart of the Venetian Republic and the city that inherited it. Processions of doges crossed this pavement. Merchants struck deals under its arcades. Today, the pigeons and the tourists have inherited what emperors once envied.]]></description>
