An English observer called it 'the stride of a giant.' The plan was to bypass the Confederate army near Washington entirely, land on the Peninsula between the York and James Rivers, and march northwest to seize Richmond, the Confederate capital, in a matter of weeks. Instead, McClellan spent four months being outbluffed, outflanked, and outfought on a narrow spit of Virginia lowland where mud, malaria, and his own caution proved as dangerous as Confederate bullets.
