Pearl Islands: Introduction

Isla Contadora -- Counting Island -- was where pearls harvested from across the archipelago were sorted, registered, and prepared for the long journey over the isthmus to Spain. The indigenous people who inhabited these Pacific islands off Panama's coast had known the pearl beds for generations before the sixteenth-century conquistadors arrived in search of fortune, glory, and whatever the sea floor would yield. The Pearl Islands still carry that layered history: a place valued first for what could be extracted from it, then for the sanctuary its remoteness provided to pirates, and now for the white sand beaches and deep-sea fishing that draw a different kind of fortune seeker.
