Papakōlea Beach, tucked into the crumbling remnant of a volcanic cone on the Big Island's remote southern tip, is one of only two green sand beaches on Earth. The other sits on Floreana Island in the Galapagos, more than 5,000 miles to the southeast. What makes this place so rare is a mineral called olivine, locally known as "Hawaiian Diamond," which has been accumulating here for millennia through a process as elegant as it is improbable.]]></description>
