From 1980 to 1985, a grinding cycle of aerial bombardment, armored assault, and guerrilla counterattack played out in a gorge seventy kilometers north of Kabul, where Ahmad Shah Massoud's mujahideen -- initially armed with little more than antiquated rifles -- fought the world's largest conventional military to a standstill. The valley became the war's defining theater, a place where Soviet tactical supremacy repeatedly collided with Afghan resilience and geography that favored the defender.
