Pachacamac: Introduction

When the man starved to death, the creator god Pacha Kamaq -- the "Earth Maker" -- flew into a rage against the woman's children, trying to kill them one by one until her hero-son Wichama threw him into the sea. Defeated but unbroken, Pacha Kamaq settled for a lesser throne: supreme god of fish. This is the deity whose name echoes across 600 hectares of mud-brick ruins in the Lurin River valley, 40 kilometers southeast of Lima. For 1,300 years, from roughly A.D. 200 until the Spanish conquest, Pachacamac was one of the most important religious centers on Peru's central coast -- a place where people came to consult an oracle, bury their dead, and seek the favor of a god whose creation myth reads less like scripture and more like a family argument.
