That was 1865, during construction of the original coach road through the Otira Gorge, and it set the tone for a passage that would spend the next 130 years trying to kill everyone who used it. The road descends 495 meters from the summit of Arthur's Pass to the tiny settlement of Otira in a punishing series of hairpins, with avalanches from above and landslips from below. In 1999, engineers finally tamed the worst of it with 440 meters of concrete and steel suspended 40 meters in the air.
