Kilburn, Public domain. On 30 January 1854, a royal proclamation signed in London did something empires rarely do: it gave territory back. The British Crown formally abandoned "all dominion" over the Orange River Sovereignty, a stretch of grassland between the Orange and Vaal rivers that it had claimed just six years earlier. The Boer settlers who had been fighting for exactly this outcome could scarcely believe it. They established the Orange Free State, elected a volksraad, set Dutch as the official language, and began the work of building a republic on land that already belonged to several other peoples -- the Sotho, the Griqua, the Korana, the Barolong, and the San -- most of whom had no say in the arrangement.
