For nine years, from 1966 to 1975, thousands of workers drilled and blasted their way through 82.8 kilometers of rock beneath the Suurberg plateau, building the longest continuous enclosed aqueduct in the southern hemisphere. The Orange-Fish River Tunnel was designed to solve one of South Africa's most stubborn geographic problems: the Orange River, the country's largest by volume, flowed westward into the Atlantic, while the semi-arid Eastern Cape, desperately short of water, lay to the south. The tunnel reversed that equation -- not by moving the river, but by punching a hole through the mountains between them.
