It was the morning of 12 November 1944, and 32 Lancaster bombers from the RAF's elite Nos. 9 and 617 Squadrons were bearing down on the most hunted warship in the world. They carried Tallboy bombs -- 12,000-pound, armor-piercing weapons designed to do what years of carrier strikes, midget submarine attacks, and conventional bombing had failed to accomplish. Within fourteen minutes of the first bomb falling, Tirpitz had capsized.]]></description>
