      <description><![CDATA[For forty years there was a sound that defined the northern outskirts of Oldenburg: the rolling thunder of jet engines spooling up, the high whistle of a Vampire on takeoff, the crack of a Sabre rotating onto the runway. RAF squadrons flew here in the early 1950s as part of Royal Air Force Germany, swapping piston-engined Vampires for the swept wings of the Hawker Hunter. Then the West German Luftwaffe took over, flying Sabres, then Fiat G.91 light strike jets, then the elegant Alpha Jet right up until the end. On 30 September 1993 a single squadron's disbandment closed the base. A year later the runway was officially decommissioned. The thunder stopped.]]></description>
