The Declaration of Christmas Peace, unchanged since the 14th century, commands citizens to celebrate the holiday in tranquility or face harsh punishment. The tradition began when this cobblestoned rectangle was the administrative and commercial heart of Finland's largest city. Seven centuries later, the square has burned, been rebuilt, lost half its buildings to a park, and evolved into a cultural landmark - but the Christmas Peace balcony still commands attention, and the declaration still sounds.
