The floodwaters rise, submerging nearly the entire 5,918-hectare reserve for days, turning forest floor into shallow lake and blurring the boundary between river and land. When the water recedes, it leaves behind a mosaic of vernal pools, oxbow lakes, and saturated meadows that will sustain one of the richest concentrations of wildlife in Kirov Oblast through the summer months. This annual inundation is not a disaster but a rhythm -- the heartbeat of a floodplain ecosystem that has been protected from commercial activity since 1952 and designated a strict nature reserve, or zapovednik, since 1994.
