Pink river dolphins - boto, in Brazilian Portuguese - surface alongside a small dock, flap their pink-gray bodies in the black water, and accept fish from tourists who stand on the rocking wood of the floating platform. The practice is regulated, controversial, and irresistible. The boto are the largest river dolphins on Earth, reaching up to 2.5 meters, and Amazonian legend says they sometimes come ashore at night in human form, impregnate women, and return to the river by dawn.
