North York Moors: Introduction

In late summer the heather blooms purple across 554 square miles of upland Yorkshire, and the moor becomes a colour that does not quite exist anywhere else in Britain. There is no comparable expanse of heather in the United Kingdom. The North York Moors holds it. The park was designated in 1952 under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949, and in 2020 it added another distinction: International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear October night, away from the few villages, you can see the Milky Way the way most of England has not been able to see it in a century.
