Photo credit Juan Carlos Fonseca Mata, CC BY-SA 4.0. The Matlatzinca people called it Nro'maani Nechchutatá -- House of the God of Waters. The Otomi called it Tastobo, White Mountain. Its official Nahuatl name, Xinantecatl, has been variously translated as Naked Man, Bat Mountain, Nine Mountains, or Nine Waters. No one agrees on what to call this volcano, but everyone agrees on what makes it remarkable: a massive open crater at 4,690 meters containing two shallow lakes that have been receiving offerings of copal and ritual objects since the pre-Hispanic period. At that altitude, the air is thin, the temperature drops sharply below the surrounding valleys, and on days when snow covers the rim, visitors from Mexico City and Toluca arrive by the thousands.
