Photo credit Graham Winterflood, FAL. Most crossroads are busy by definition - a place where traffic meets, where there is reason to stop. Neale Junction is the opposite. It is one of the most isolated road junctions in Australia, a single intersection in the middle of the Great Victoria Desert where two unsealed tracks cross and then continue, each running for hundreds of kilometres before reaching anything resembling a town. The nearest fuel and supplies, at the small community of Ilkurlka, sit 172 kilometres to the east. To stand at this junction is to be about as far from another human being as the Australian mainland allows.
