But there is nothing simple about protecting 812,745 hectares of Amazon rainforest in a place where the nearest paved road has been abandoned and the nearest city requires a boat or a bush plane to reach. Created by decree in May 2008, the Nascentes do Lago Jari National Park sits in the heart of the Purus-Madeira interfluve in Amazonas state, straddling the municipalities of Tapaua and Beruri. Its mandate is to safeguard the basin of the Jari River, an important tributary of the Purus, and by extension to anchor a chain of protected lands that stretches between two of the Amazon's greatest rivers.
