The South Nahanni River cuts through one of the most remote landscapes in North America - a wilderness of canyons, hot springs, and legends that keep hikers nervous. The valley earned its ominous nickname in the early 1900s when gold prospectors entered and didn't come out. Some were found dead, decapitated. Others simply vanished. Local Dene people had avoided the valley for generations, warning of dangerous spirits. White settlers added their own myths: tropical valleys heated by volcanic activity, a lost tribe of giants, something that killed silently and took heads. The decapitations were likely the work of scavengers. The disappearances were likely the wilderness doing what wilderness does. The legends persist anyway.
