The Americans called it Mutter's Ridge, after the radio callsign of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, who climbed it and held it in the autumn of 1966. That name, borrowed from a military bureaucracy's phonetic alphabet, stuck through years of fighting, through the establishment and abandonment of landing zones, through the deaths of men whose families would never visit the jungle hillsides where they fell.
