Big Red rises perhaps forty metres above the gibber, a wall of soft rust-coloured grains that swallows momentum and laughs at horsepower. Crest it and you are no longer at the edge of the Simpson Desert. You are in it. This is Munga-Thirri National Park, the Queensland flank of the great dune sea, and for years it was the largest national park in the state. It offers no cafe, no campground with showers, no marked trail. What it offers is one of the last genuine four-wheel-drive frontiers in Australia.
