The officer who said it spoke flawless English, and he had just rowed across a calm stretch of the Mozambique Channel from a German pocket battleship to inform Patrick Dove that his ship was about to be sunk. It was the morning of 15 November 1939, somewhere off Cape Zavora on the coast of Portuguese East Africa, and the Africa Shell had been at work for only a few months. She would not see another sunrise.
