That was the total population of the Cape mountain zebra across all of South Africa by the 1950s, down from herds that once roamed every mountain range in the southern Cape. Hunting and competition with livestock had reduced one of the continent's most distinctive equids to a biological footnote, a species that existed in numbers small enough to count on a very bad day. Mountain Zebra National Park was proclaimed in 1937 specifically to prevent that count from reaching zero, and for years the outcome was genuinely uncertain. By 1964, just 25 zebras survived within the park's fences. The story of what happened next is one of the quietest, most stubborn conservation successes in African history.
