The mountain itself has endured far longer. Rising 1,132.7 meters from the coast of Shandong Province -- the highest peak that meets the sea anywhere in China -- Mount Lao has been a center of Taoist worship for over a thousand years, home to as many as 1,000 monks and nuns at its peak, and the birthplace of the Complete Perfection School of Taoism.
