The Kadazan-Dusun people call it Gayo Ngaran or Nulu Nabalu and regard its summit as the resting place of the dead. For botanists, it is something like a vertical continent: between its base and its peak, the mountain passes through enough climate zones to support an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 plant species, 326 species of birds, and over 100 mammalian species.
