At 5:57 on the morning of November 27, 2020, the summit of Mount Ile Lewotolok split open. An ash column punched 500 meters into the predawn sky above Lembata island. Two days later, a far more violent blast sent a plume soaring to 50,000 feet -- over 15 kilometers -- high enough to disrupt aviation across the region. Within a week, more than 5,500 people had fled their homes. The volcano had been erupting intermittently since 1660, but this was something else. Locals call it Gunung Api Lewotolok: Lewotolok Fire Mountain. It has been earning the name ever since.
