Born into slavery at Montpelier, the Madison family plantation in Orange County, Virginia, Jennings would later write the first White House memoir, help orchestrate the largest slave escape in American history, and spend decades fighting for the freedom he had been denied since birth. His story, and the stories of hundreds of enslaved people across five, six, possibly seven generations, are woven into every brick and floorboard of the estate that shaped the man who shaped the Constitution.
