They are the work of the ancestors of the Mojenos -- also known as Moxenos or Moxos -- an Arawak-descended people who engineered one of the most sophisticated hydraulic civilizations in pre-Columbian South America. The great earthworks, dated to around 250 CE, turned a flood-prone wilderness into productive farmland, and their remnants still mark the landscape today.
