Photo credit Omar1976, Public domain. Ten men stepped off the galley Santa Elvira on October 19, 1697, into a landscape that had defeated every European attempt at settlement for 162 years. The place the Monqui people called Coruncho offered almost nothing: a patch of stunted shrubbery, a spring of fresh water, and a coastline so arid that even the cactus looked parched. Jesuit missionary Juan Maria de Salvatierra planted a wooden cross anyway. Six days later, he carried the image of the Virgin of Our Lady of Loreto in solemn procession through the dust, and with that ritual, the first permanent Spanish mission in all of Baja California came into being.
