That was the total gold yield from the first full year of mining operations at Millwood, in the indigenous forests of South Africa's Garden Route. It was enough to spark a rush, not enough to sustain one. Within five years of the Millwood Gold Fields being declared open in 1886, virtually every mining company had collapsed, the fortune-seekers had moved on, and the forest had begun reclaiming the village they left behind. Today, a cemetery, rusting equipment, and a small museum are all that remain of one of South Africa's earliest and most futile gold rushes.
