Merina Kingdom: Introduction

Their kingdom began as a collection of hilltop settlements on the central highlands around 1540, when a warrior named Andriamanelo turned on the Vazimba communities his ancestors had married into and forged something new: a unified state with fortified towns, standing armies, and a cosmological order written into the very layout of its cities. By the 19th century, the Kingdom of Imerina had expanded to dominate most of Madagascar, projecting power from its twin capitals -- the political seat at Antananarivo and the spiritual heart at Ambohimanga.
