Mercury-Redstone 3: Introduction

He had been lying on his back in the Freedom 7 capsule for over four hours while engineers chased one delay after another, and nobody had planned for this particular contingency. After some debate, Mission Control told him to go in his suit. He did. Then, at 9:34 a.m. on May 5, 1961, a Redstone rocket lifted him off Launch Complex 5 at Cape Canaveral, and the United States finally had a man in space. The flight lasted just fifteen minutes and twenty-two seconds. Shepard reached an altitude of 116.5 statute miles, experienced five minutes of weightlessness, pulled 11 g's during reentry, and splashed down in the Atlantic 302 miles downrange. It was, by the standards of what would follow, a modest ride. But on that May morning, with Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight just three weeks old, it was enough to prove that America could compete.
